Exploring History Through Film

Explore some of history’s pivotal moments through some of cinema’s greatest gems. Instructor Jen Moses will offer a brief introduction to each film to provide historical background and context for the film. After viewing the film, the group will have a brief discussion; handouts will be provided. Jen has a BA in History from University of Illinois at Chicago and an MA in American History from University of Delaware; she is currently a PhD candidate in History at University of Delaware.

Help create the Center on the Hill Tile Mural
Choose one date: Friday, January 27, 1:00 p.m. (or) Monday, January 30, 7:00 p.m.
Suggested donation: $30, which includes instruction and supplies to create two ceramic tiles.

Last spring, we started working on a patchwork mural of ceramic tiles to adorn the walls of Center on the Hill. When finished, the mural will provide a visual representation of the friends, neighbors and partner organizations that have made Center on the Hill what is is—the place for active adults. Come create a decorative tile to contribute to our Ceramic Tile Patchwork Quilt. The tile can be representative of you, your neighborhood, or of your local business. A poster featuring tiles to-date is on display in the Center. Karen Singer, an accomplished ceramicist, will lead the workshop where each participant will create a six-inch by six-inch tile that will be part of the patchwork mural that we will install on our walls. Mah Jongg 201 (Beginners)

Learn to play this ever popular and challenging ancient Chinese tile game involving skill, strategy and a good degree of pure chance. Mah Jongg 101 is for true beginners. Instructor Barbara Penny is a local Estates Attorney who keeps her mind razor-sharp by playing Mah Jongg weekly with her established group. Barbara was introduced to the game while vacationing in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico almost 10 years ago. With her passion for the game, Barbara thoroughly enjoys teaching the finer points of playing and helping others enjoy the game.

Due to popular demand, a second class, Mah Jongg 201, is also being offered. AARP Driver Safety Refresher Course

This course is available to all those who have completed the AARP Driver Safety Class within the past three years. Participants will need to bring to class their driver’s license and proof of having previously completed the 2-day training. Design Your Own Jewelry (Beginners)

In the beginners workshop you will learn how to design beautiful jewelry out of real, semi precious stones and fresh water pearls, and the basics of jewelry making. Participants will make a necklace, earrings, and pendant, using the three essential tools for jewelry making. Starter kids will be provided. Four person minimum.

Session 1: Art for Book Lovers
Many works of art have been inspired by mythological dramas and great works of literature. This session provides an opportunity to examine some of these works and talk about literature and painting.

Session 2: A Tribute to Vincent van Gogh
A bouquet of sunflowers in a vase is Vincent van Gogh’s best known and loved painting. Sunflowers is the bearer of stories about the relationship between van Gogh and fellow artist Paul Gauguin.

Session 3: Visual Art and Healing
In this program, we will be looking at seven paintings; Vincent Van Gogh’s "Rain" and "Sunflowers"; Fernand Leger’s "The City"; Frida Kahlo’s "Two Fridas"; Emily Carr’s "Dark Forest" and "House"; and Edward Hooper’s "Automat," as a way to explore an array of human emotions. Presenter Flo Gelo is a Pastoral Psychotherapist at the Samaritan Counseling Center in Chestnut Hill, a museum guide at the Woodmere Art Museum and for ten years a guide at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

In this informative course you will learn the basics, the steps you should start taking today, and the journey for staying on track. We will also discuss the importance of examining your early money messages, what financial security looks like for you, and how to track and monitor your progress. Studies have shown that the presence of flowers in our lives triggers happy emotions, heightens life satisfaction and affects social behavior in a positive way. With nearly a decade of experience designing flowers for all occasions, Falls Flowers owner Peicha Chang will demonstrate how you can take simple market bouquets and transform them into works of art that can be shared and enjoyed in the home or with friends. In this interactive class, you will learn basic design strategies and tips for creating professional-looking arrangements. Please bring a small-medium sized vase if you wish to take home an arrangement.

The Role of Complementary Medicine for People with Cancer and Their Loved Ones

This workshop, presented in partnership with the Cancer Resource Center of Chestnut Hill Hospital, will provide information on what complementary therapies are, their potential value in coping with symptoms and side effects of treatment, and how to choose a practitioner. Four specific modalities will be covered, including massage, acupuncture, meditation and mindful movement, one of which you can experience here. Learn how these modalities work and how they can help alleviate stress, anxiety, fatigue, nausea, pain, insomnia and other conditions. Program presenters include Kathy Corbett, M.S., CT, an instructor with the Mindfulness Institute at Jefferson’s Center for Integrative Medicine; Les Rolf, a retired veterinarian who is a licensed massage therapist, a licensed acupuncture practitioner and an instructor at the Won Institute; and Lori Curtis, MSW, an oncology social worker at Chestnut Hill Hospital.

Sandra Bernstein, MSN, RN, LMFT is a therapist in private practice who has trained in MB-EAT and MBSR.  She is a licensed family therapist and nurse. This year’s Spring Clean Up will be on Sunday, April 22. According to the Centers for Disease Control, one out of every three adults over the age of 65 falls each year and yet 50 percent of all falls are preventable. Falls are the leading cause of hip and forearm fractures in older adults and these fractures typically have a significant impact on quality of life. During this presentation, Christian Mongrain, PT, Director of Physical Therapy, Chestnut Hill Hospital, will address strategies to prevent falls, including how to “fall proof” your home.
