Session 1 – Senior Speak 101

There are a lot of living arrangement options for seniors, but the lingo is often confusing. For example, what are the distinctions between CCRC, IL, AL, 55+ neighborhoods, and memory care? How do you utilize the system to apply for residency? Why is one’s proficiency in Activities of Daily Living so important in terms of living arrangement choices?

If you prefer to stay home, what is the difference between Home Care Agencies and Home Care Registries? What can you expect insurance, Medicare, and Medicaid to cover and what are typical out-of-pocket expenses? What is the difference between Non-Medical Assistance and Medical Assistance?

Leading the discussion are two seasoned professionals who are professional advocates for seniors: Lydia Gemmer, Director, BAYADA Home Health Care and Deb Klock, Owner, DLK Managed Care Solutions

EMCEE: Therese Comyns, Here to Home, Inc.

Session 2 – Should I stay or should I go?

As your lifestyle changes, you’re left asking yourself whether you should stay in your home or move to a Senior Community? We will discuss considerations for choosing a Senior Community and outline the process involved in moving to one. Also presenteded will be the factors, beyond ramps and grab bars, to consider when staying at home. We will walk you through a typical accessibility assessment of your home and things to consider when choosing to stay home.

Leading the discussion are two Senior Transition Specialists from Here to Home, Inc. who know the ins and outs of moving versus remaining in your home. Therese Comyns is a Certified Relocation and Transition Specialist and Margaret Fahringer is a Certified Aging in Place Specialist.

EMCEE: Megan McCrae, Ross & McCrae LLP

Session 3 – Will you still need me, will you still feed me when I’m 84?

Because Americans are living longer, 84 is the new 64.  Here, we’ll discuss important decisions that need to be made, now that you are retired or retiring.  What financial steps can you take to promote the retirement lifestyle you desire? What can you do to make sure that you don’t outlive your money? How can you protect your nest egg? Who can you trust and rely upon to take care of you and your finances, if you can no longer do so yourself? What types of documents do you need for expressing your wishes and ensuring that they are honored?

Leading the discussion are two professionals who regularly help people make these important financial and legal decisions. McKenzie Frankel is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERTM practitioner with Entrust Financial, Inc. and Megan McCrea, Esq., Ross & McCrea LLP, is an attorney specializing in estate planning and administration.

EMCEE: Margaret Fahringer, Here to Home, Inc.

Session 4 – Lighten Up! (and save the sanity of your adult children in the process!)

When you have been in a home 30, 40, or 50 years, you accumulate a lot of stuff. Which documents do you REALLY need to keep? How should you organize these documents? What can you shred? What do you do with your collectibles? You really don’t want to burden the kids with this but you don’t want to spend your time going through it all either.  First, we walk you through organizing your documents and possessions.  Then, we provide options for disposing of those items you realize you actually can live without!

Leading the discussion are three professionals who help people decide what to keep; then help them sell or auction off what they no longer need. Abby Lederman, SwiftSellIt, is an E-Bay and online sales specialist. Tim Zeigler, Kamelot, is a local auction house specializing in Estate Auctions. Amy Dobin, Peace of Mind Paperwork Management, a specialist in what to do to control your paper.

EMCEE: McKenzie Frankel, Entrust Financial, Inc.

Session 5 – Last Call to Ask the Experts

In response to your suggestions from past seminars, every presenter from sessions one through four will be at session five. Here is your chance to bring in that beloved treasure and ask the experts how to value and sell it. Or perhaps you still need more information about moving, finances or wills. Everyone, whether you attend the first four sessions or not, is invited to this one-on-one opportunity to meet the experts.

Alice Neel resisted being called a portrait artist and chose instead to call herself a “collector of souls.” Her models, among them artists, writers and the famous, speak about how Neel captured their “essence.” With her brush, and with each decade, Neel’s portraits gave voice to ordinary people struggling with life in America. This lecture by Dr. Flo Gelo will examine Neel’s life and politics and their relationship to her art. Dr. Gelo is Associate Professor in the Department of Family, Community and Preventive Medicine, the Behavioral Science Coordinator for the Family Medicine Residency Program, and the Director of the Humanities Scholar’s Program at Drexel University College of Medicine. In November 2008, “The HeART of Empathy: Using the Visual Arts in Medical Education,” a film that Dr. Gelo directed and produced, was released and distributed around the country.  The Family Medicine Education Consortium (FMEC) selected “The HeART of Empathy...” as the winner of their 2009 Family Medicine through the Visual Arts Award. Dr Gelo is a Pastoral Psychotherapist at the Samaritan Counseling Center in Chestnut Hill and a museum guide at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Woodmere Art Museum.
