age of fifty will have an osteoporosis-related fracture in their remaining
lifetime and that osteoporosis is responsible for 1.5 million fractures a year
in the United States? Also, half of all women and thirty percent of men have
osteopenia (low bone mass), which often leads to osteoporosis. Come to this important
workshop presented by Joanne Fagerstrom, physical therapist and certified
Feldenkrais instructor, and learn how you can take charge of your bone health.
All the information presented will be based on the latest, evidence-based
guidelines from the medical community. ABC’S OF QUALITY ZZZZZZZS A good night’s sleep is as important to overall good health as
proper nutrition and regular exercise. Statistics indicate that sleep
conditions affect nearly a quarter of the U.S. population. Sleepiness or an
inability to concentrate may not seem like significant reasons to seek medical
attention, but left untreated, sleep-wake disorders can lead to more serious
health conditions. Join Scott Rosenberg, M.D., Chestnut Hill Hospital sleep
specialist, to learn the symptoms, diagnostic processes and treatment options
for common sleep problems. Dr. Rosenberg will discuss possible causes and provide
tips for lifestyle changes that may improve quality of sleep. MINDFULNESS-BASED STRESS MANAGEMENT WITH PENN MEDICINE For almost two decades the Penn Program for Mindfulness has
taught thousands of people how to use mindfulness and meditation for stress
management. Class participants have reported dramatic reductions in anxiety,
depression, anger and fatigue. This workshop is now offered three times a year
(Fall, Winter, Spring) here at Center on the Hill. For more information go to

AND LONGEVITY This presentation and discussion will explore recent research
studies on the complex issues of loneliness and social isolation and their
deleterious effect on mental and physical health, particularly as we age. The
benefits of purposeful social relationships will be highlighted. Be sure you
are on the right track in terms of your connectedness by arming yourself with
important information and a helpful “to do” list from this seminar. Presenter
Bess Wray has thirty years experience in the field of non-medical in-home care.
Bess is the founder and owner of Human Touch Home Care, Ltd., a Pa. licensed,
non-medical, in home care registry, based in Flourtown. SCULPTURE Express yourself by working in water-based clay. Paint your
finished piece(s) with a protective decorative glaze, rather than use a
traditional kiln. Margaret Swartz, known professionally as “Pegalina,” studied
at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, and over the years has taught many
sculpture classes. TOUGH CONVERSATIONS:
EVERYTHING YOU WANT TO KNOW ABOUT THE GOLDEN YEARS BUT ARE AFRAID TO ASK Session 1 – Senior Speak 101 There are a lot of living arrangement options for seniors, but
the lingo is often confusing. For example, what are the distinctions between
CCRC, IL, AL, 55+ neighborhoods, and memory care? How do you utilize the system
to apply for residency? Why is one’s proficiency in Activities of Daily Living
so important in terms of living arrangement choices? If you prefer to stay home, what is the difference between Home
Care Agencies and Home Care Registries? What can you expect insurance,
Medicare, and Medicaid to cover and what are typical out-of-pocket expenses?
What is the difference between Non-Medical Assistance and Medical Assistance? Leading the discussion are two seasoned professionals who are
professional advocates for seniors: Lydia Gemmer, Director, BAYADA Home Health
Care and Deb Klock, Owner, DLK Managed Care Solutions EMCEE: Therese Comyns, Here to Home, Inc. Session 2 – Should I stay or should I go? As your lifestyle changes, you’re left asking yourself whether
you should stay in your home or move to a Senior Community? We will discuss
considerations for choosing a Senior Community and outline the process involved
in moving to one. Also presenteded will be the factors, beyond ramps and grab
bars, to consider when staying at home. We will walk you through a typical
accessibility assessment of your home and things to consider when choosing to
stay home. Leading the discussion are two Senior Transition Specialists from
Here to Home, Inc. who know the ins and outs of moving versus remaining in your
home. Therese Comyns is a Certified Relocation and Transition Specialist and
Margaret Fahringer is a Certified Aging in Place Specialist. EMCEE: Megan McCrae, Ross & McCrae LLP Session 3 – Will you still need me, will you still feed me
when I’m 84? Because Americans are living longer, 84 is the new 64. Here, we’ll discuss important decisions that
need to be made, now that you are retired or retiring. What financial steps can you take to promote
the retirement lifestyle you desire? What can you do to make sure that you
don’t outlive your money? How can you protect your nest egg? Who can you trust
and rely upon to take care of you and your finances, if you can no longer do so
yourself? What types of documents do you need for expressing your wishes and
ensuring that they are honored? Leading the discussion are two professionals who regularly help
people make these important financial and legal decisions. McKenzie Frankel is
a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERTM practitioner with Entrust Financial, Inc. and
Megan McCrea, Esq., Ross & McCrea LLP, is an attorney specializing in
estate planning and administration. EMCEE: Margaret Fahringer, Here to Home, Inc. Session 4 – Lighten Up! (and save the sanity of your adult
children in the process!) When you have been in a home 30, 40, or 50 years, you accumulate
a lot of stuff. Which documents do you REALLY need to keep? How should you
organize these documents? What can you shred? What do you do with your
collectibles? You really don’t want to burden the kids with this but you don’t
want to spend your time going through it all either. First, we walk you through organizing your
documents and possessions. Then, we
provide options for disposing of those items you realize you actually can live
without! Leading the discussion are three professionals who help people
decide what to keep; then help them sell or auction off what they no longer
need. Abby Lederman, SwiftSellIt, is an E-Bay and online sales specialist. Tim
Zeigler, Kamelot, is a local auction house specializing in Estate Auctions. Amy
Dobin, Peace of Mind Paperwork Management, a specialist in what to do to
control your paper. EMCEE: McKenzie Frankel, Entrust Financial, Inc. Session 5 – Last Call to Ask the Experts In response to your suggestions from past seminars, every
presenter from sessions one through four will be at session five. Here is your
chance to bring in that beloved treasure and ask the experts how to value and
sell it. Or perhaps you still need more information about moving, finances or
wills. Everyone, whether you attend the first four sessions or not, is invited
to this one-on-one opportunity to meet the experts. Get Moving with your Local Cardiologist Regular exercise is unequivocally one of the best things you
could possibly do for your health, your longevity and for feeling youthful. So
why is it so hard to start an exercise program and stay with it? Penn Medicine cardiologist, Raymond Rodriguez, M.D., Medical
Director of Cardiovascular Services at Chestnut Hill Hospital and eight time
marathon runner, wants to change your exercise habits once and for all. Also
teaching and motivating the group will be Jackie Yorko who has her master’s
degree in exercise physiology and is certified as a personal trainer, strength
coach, and spin instructor. Come to this informative, motivating, six session education and
walk/run program, taught by a cardiologist and exercise physiologist. A brief
educational session about exercise and your body will be followed by a planned
walk or run, followed by a post exercise Q & A session. The goal is to meet
and sustain American Heart Association recommendations on exercise. All levels
are encouraged to participate. NOTE: Any specific health limitations should be discussed with
your family doctor, as this is not considered a medically supervised exercise
program. MIXED-MEDIA ART WITH A PURPOSE If you’re looking for ways to express the artistic you, why not
create unique and stunning greeting cards from found treasures and recycled
items (old photos, favorite poems, lace and ribbon). Or learn to build your own
journal covers from a unique “hinged book” design. Perhaps you prefer to work
with the instructor to produce a different imaginative, useful project. Teacher
Martina Johnson-Allen is a writer and mixed-media artist with a passion for
mathematics. Educated at Penn State University, University of the Arts, the
Center for Book Arts in New York, and the Tyler School of Art, Martina has
exhibited work at Allens Lane and Abington Art Centers, the Renwick and
National Museum of American Art in Washington, DC, Philadelphia Museum of Art,
the African American Museum of Philadelphia, and U.S. Embassies in Ghana and
Djibouti. DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY ESSENTIALS Are you intimidated by your digital camera or not satisfied with
the photos you take? This hands-on class
will show you how to get the most out of your camera. Become familiar with all
the camera functions and learn how and when to use them. Learn strategies for
taking more satisfying photographs, as we discuss editing software and display
options. Equipment requirements: a functional digital camera with adjustable
shutter, aperture and ISO controls. Photography instructor Ken Weiner teaches photography and digital
technology subjects to students of all ages and skill levels. Ken has exhibited
photographs and paintings in venues throughout the Greater Philadelphia area.
He is currently Exhibition Chairman of the Philadelphia Sketch Club, the oldest
club for artists in the country. MAXIMIZE YOUR MEMORY This presentation is filled with fun facts and practical
information about remembering what you are starting to forget. If you think
that your memory is worsening, you may be giving into the myth that aging and
memory loss go hand in hand. Learn how memory works, what factors affect memory
changes as we age, and strategies for enhancing memory sharpness. Patricia Anasiewicz, RN, MSN, MBA, CTTS is a Registered Nurse

Administration. Pat has worked in clinical practice, administration, and
education and is currently a Community Outreach Nurse for Abington Health. Pat
is also a Certified Tobacco Treatment Specialist. HIP AND KNEE ARTHRITIS The Center for Disease Control predicts nearly 67 million adults
will suffer with arthritis by 2030. The hip and knee joints are the most common
places to feel the arthritis which tears at the joints. Learn how to take care
of your hip and knee joints and when to seek medical treatment for pain.
Timothy Kleeper, M.D., Chestnut Hill Hospital family medicine, will review the
diagnosis and treatment options available to you and answer any questions you
might have. Eat, Move, Live: What Our Furry Friends Teach Us about Diet, Exercise and Life In this program, participants will learn how animals have become
teachers in the ways of eating, moving and living. For anyone who has ever
loved an animal and received that love unconditionally, this talk will warm the
heart and soul like a steaming cup of chicken soup. We will pass around the dog bowl for
donations to Delaware Valley Golden Retriever Rescue (www.dvgrr.org). LECTURE at WOODMERE ART MUSEUM: ALICE NEEL - ENCOUNTERS WITH HUMANITY Alice Neel resisted being called a portrait artist and chose
instead to call herself a “collector of souls.” Her models, among them artists,
writers and the famous, speak about how Neel captured their “essence.” With her
brush, and with each decade, Neel’s portraits gave voice to ordinary people
struggling with life in America. This lecture by Dr. Flo Gelo will examine Neel’s
life and politics and their relationship to her art. Dr. Gelo is Associate
Professor in the Department of Family, Community and Preventive Medicine, the
Behavioral Science Coordinator for the Family Medicine Residency Program, and
the Director of the Humanities Scholar’s Program at Drexel University College
of Medicine. In November 2008, “The HeART of Empathy: Using the Visual Arts in
