Our Brother's Place

Members of this congregation have served up thousands of helpings of homemade Sloppy Joes for more than ten years at Our Brother’s Place men’s shelter. The shelter, at 906 Hamilton St. in the Spring Garden section of Philadelphia, is run by the Bethesda Project, which an interfaith organization with a long track record in helping the homeless. Bethesda Project currently owns several properties in the city providing transitional and permanent housing for 120 men and women, and shelter and support services for many more. For additional information about Bethesda, click here.

At Our Brother’s Place, Bethesda shelters 150 men each night and provides day services for 200 or more men. With the cold winter temperatures, these numbers are increasing; often more than 250 men show up for dinner.  Members of this congregation supply and serve dinner the fourth Sunday of every month. This effort depends upon volunteers to prepare Sloppy Joes at home, and to sign up to serve the meal at the shelter. The Social Witness Committee invites you to be part of this project.

The Sloppy Joes recipe is easy. Next time you are at a supermarket, pick up 2 pounds of ground beef and a large can of Manwich. Brown the meat and spoon it into a large Ziploc bag. Add the Manwich sauce and mix well. Seal the bag, freeze flat, and bring it to the church kitchen at your convenience - that's it! This is a very popular meal at the shelter, with many requests for second helpings.

We are always looking for volunteers to join a serving team. This is a wonderful opportunity for a family or group of friends to be "in mission" together. It's a little over a three-hour time commitment (from about 3:00 to 6:30 pm), and absolutely no experience is necessary! Please contact Sylvia Studenmund or the church office to sign up!
